Need for Data Interpretation

In order for the data collected by sensors to be useful to transmission and substation managers, it must first be analyzed and interpreted. Algorithms are used to translate raw data into useful information about the condition of the component.

Development Approach

Development Efforts: EPRI is currently developing algorithms that combine condition information gathered from sensors with a fundamental understanding of the equipment to provide decision support for performance and risk management. As part of this effort, EPRI is examining equipment that has been flagged as high-risk by sensor technologies. Information related to the actual condition is compared to sensor data to refine the algorithms.

Challenges

A deep understanding of degradation and failures modes is necessary in order for algorithms to be developed. In addition, a large volume of historical information on failures and loading history must be collected from utility historians.
